MGNTA Members & Friends:
Here are some pics that illustrate the need to be very careful when checking your oil.
This engine is an exaggerated example since it has a girdle and the studs are therefore longer. The principal is the same, the main cap stud or bolt will be in very close proximity to the dipstick. This can cause a false reading if the level is low because the stick may pick up some oil from the stud or bolt.
To avoid a false reading check the oil level on the lower / bottom side of the stick and after several dips and wipes to avoid excess oil being deposited on the stick from contact.
The best time to check your oil is just prior to running your engine and after a period of non use. This will allow the oil a chance to drip back into the pan from this area. This ofcourse does not mean that a false higher reading won't occur. It just makes it less oily in that area and therefore easier to eventually get a true reading.
Be patient and dip & wipe the stick a few times to make sure!
